Bag of Rocks: When Sound, Emotions, And Talent Meet

What is Bag of Rocks?

Bag of Rocks, Soorebia’s debut album, is a dedication to form. It is a unique project conceived and shaped by hurdles as he navigates his way up to stardom. The album is an ode to his birth city and mirrors the diversity of culture and artforms that shaped his worldview and the variety of genres he dabbles.

Think of Bag of Rocks as a sealed bag containing minerals of a different kind, each with its unique richness. For Soorebia, the album is a collection of moods that he dealt with while recording the album.

“After winning the Next Rated Act at the 2020 edition of 3Music Awards, there was a lot of expectations from my fans and friends to breakthrough, and that never happened. Although COVID affected the industry so much then, I still felt I could not use the award to propel myself because of the limited financial muzzle. So, I began blaming everything on money that was when I wrote the verses for monopoly”. Soorebia revealed during his Album listening.

Songs on Bag of Rocks

Monopoly is a dancehall jam, where Soorebia turned his emotions to music speaking to the money and wealth as power distributors, which shapes the success of people in society to a more significant extent.

Soorebia-m-final

There is no emotion without love, and I’m Ready with One Nira is an appreciation of the friends and loved ones who stuck by him through thick and thin. His storytelling ability that weaves in the sultry vocals of One Nira on the hook establishes the work as not just an album but a life at play.

Through an ebb and flow performance on an Afro-Trap beat by long-time in-house producer AzkonnBeatz, Soorebia talks about nightlife and the vibe that comes to light when he is with his clique in Voole.

AzkonnaBeatz magically infused traditional African two-stringed guitar, referred to as Kologo in Local parlance, into Hip Hop sub-genre Trap beats. But the magic did not end with Voole. In Feeling, AzkonnaBeatz repeats a similar algorithm. This time, Brooklyn Inspired Drill beats, thereby pioneering new sub-genres as Afro-Trap/Afro-Drill. “Feeling” is a celebration of emotional and mental vitality.

In this project, Soorebia is selfless in recording an album that does not target just one set of his fanbase as rap heads who want it. “There is a rock for everyone”, he said when asked about the type of music the album is made of.

In celebrative moods, Soorebia shares a toast to life with the young, celebrated Rapper/Singer Fad in One Toast. The song sees Soorebia looking back at life whilst being optimistic about the success that awaits him. “I have been there and done that, like a wheel on the street I still run that, all day all night not redundant, it’s rampant, I work till I need me an accountant.”. This lyric portrays Soorebia’s current mindset as he continues his career. In this song, he goes spiritual, leaning to God to do the rest.

Soorebia-2-normal

On track 6 tilted Star, Soorebia decided to go south, not figuratively, but literally as he hops on South Africa bread Amapiono music. In this song, Soorebia delivers about 90 percent in Frafra, a Ghanaian language. In fact, some historians trace the origin of the Frafra people to South Africa. Cultural Similarities such as tone of language, traditional hunting, and funeral practices have been cited by some historians as what connects the two cultures. Star, therefore, fits perfectly into a typical Amapiono music although the song contains elements of Afrobeats.

The Album can also be perceived as an ode to his birthplace, and this is manifested in track 7 All Yours. Performed on traditional Kololgo rhythms, Soorebia sums up the important theme of the Album in this love song.

Summary on Bag of Rocks

The choice of songs in this album departs from Soorebia’ s typical aggressive rap that he is known for. But this did not come as a surprise as he has experimented with several genres and styles over the years. It also fits perfectly into the story told in the album and matches the diversity of cultures and experiences he has had growing up.

The richness of the sound, its representation of Africa, and the sonic quality are a mark of maturity and investment that Soorebia and AzkonnaBeatz have witnessed over the years. Bag of Rocks is an essential album for the growing Ghanaian/African Music and a true sound of Africa for the continent and global audience.

This year’s theme is so apt right now because it challenges each of us here to be intentional about breaking biases towards women.

Right from the homes and how we socialize our male and female children. What are the things we say to them and how do our culturally and socially accepted gender roles continue to perpetuate these biases against our gender? I have been guilty of gender bias, and I was called out by my daughter. Then I realised that I was unconsciously exhibiting biases out of probably my upbringing.

How do we sow seeds now so there’s a pipeline for the next Women Leaders? This is what the Frytol NATIONAL WOMEN’S SUMMIT is about”.

The keynote speaker was in the person of Mrs. Abiola Bawuah. She is the Regional CEO, West Africa, overseeing the group’s business in nine countries. She joined UBA Ghana in 2013 as Deputy Managing Director and was elevated to serve as the MD/CEO of UBA Ghana in 2014. She was appointed in 2018 as Regional CEO West Africa One, responsible for 6 countries. She touched on the constant need to give the girl child a chance to do and be more.

SHE LEADS; 1 Empowering Girls To Thrive Be More Effective.

SHE-LEADS-MEDIA-CAMPAIGN

What inspired the ‘She Leads’ Campaign?

She Leads…In a world where being a female means working extra hard to ‘catch up’ to what many call ‘a man’s world’, it is imperative that all avenues be used to remind society of the proverb ‘if you educate a man, you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.

It is with this background that Plan International launches a media campaign dubbed ‘SHE LEADS’.

The campaign was launched on International Women’s Day (IWD), which is celebrated on 8th of March each year. The celebration is to recognize women’s social, economic, and political achievements. It also highlights the importance of creating conditions favourable to women for their full and equal participation in social development.

She-Leads-4

What is ‘She Leads’ about?

Presenting the general overview of the project, Anna Nabere, Program Manager of the Campaign, stated that the strategic objective of the project is to increase sustained influence of girls and young women (GYW) on decision-making and the transformation of gender norms in formal and informal institutions. She added that, the long-term aim (impact) of She Leads is that GYW’s perspectives are included in gender responsive laws and policies and societal norms and practices.

She-Leads-1

In her presentation, she delved into the geographic focus of the campaign. “East Africa (Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya), West Africa (Ghana, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia) and the Middle East (Lebanon, Jordan). Regional level programs, targeting regional institutions and others. In Ghana, specifically Ashanti Region, North East Region, Central Region, Western North region, Upper West Region and Greater Accra Region.

The keynote speaker of the event, Sheila Minkah-Premo Esq. – Women’s Rights Activist And Convenor Of The Affirmative Action Bill Coalition, in her presentation on “Bias Towards Women Leadership – Addressing The Challenge”. She reiterated that women are not given enough seats at the ‘high tables’ “Women’s Rights Activist and Convenor of the Affirmative Action Bill Coalition. Women have been marginalized in governance.

The percentage of women in Parliament is a reflection of the imbalance. The percentage has ranged from 9.6% in 1960 to 8.7 in 2008 to the current Parliament of 2021 where we have 40 out of 275 making it 14.45%. We have had one female Speaker of Parliament since independence with the rest being male. We have never had a female President or vice president. Ministerial positions have always had more men than women. The Judiciary has more men in the Superior as well as Lower Courts than women and have had two female Chief Justices since independence”.

Notable Call-to-action

She ended by calling on stakeholders to come on board to make this campaign a success and women to aspire to do and be more “As you launch the She Leads project today, I look forward to the opportunities it will create to enable young women aspire for leadership. Women are capable of achieving laurels in the public and private sectors. They need to be equipped and inspired to aspire for leadership. There is also the need to break the bias to make their push for leadership possible. This can be made possible by laws like the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Law, which will put in place programmes to ensure that there is a level playing field for both sexes”.

Songstress Adina Thembi was introduced and unveiled as the official brand ambassador for the She Leads Campaign.  She performed for the first time, the official jingle for the Campaign.

The official pledge for the campaign “I pledge to give a girl a chance because when she leads, we gain”

The She Leads Project is by Plan International Ghana in partnership with Defense for Children Ghana, Women Aspire Network and Gender Centre for Empowering Development, with funding support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

A summit that will Inspire every woman – National Women’s Summit

NATIONAL WOMEN SUMMIT:

According to G.D. Anderson, ‘Feminism is not about making women strong. Women are already strong. It is about changing the way the world perceives that strength’. Imagine a world where gender inequality is a thing of the past. A world free of bias and stereotypes, where being a female does not mean working twice as much. Marked annually, International Women’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate women’s achievements and raise awareness about women’s equality.

On Lockdown By 2Lock is every reggae lover’s must-have EP

What On Lockdown by 2Lock is about

On Lockdown by 2Lock was released on the 14th of February 2022, undoubtedly, the content makes it every reggae lover’s must-have EP. Encapsulating all the ideals that are found in reggaedom, the EP delivers 5 amazing songs that satisfy all fans. From those who lean towards consciousness to lovers, there is a song for everyone.

On Lockdown By 2Lock Art

Songs found on ‘on lockdown’.

Life as a journey is fully presented in Finding My Role. For the lovers, 2Lock gives them Isn’t She Nice & Caution. Those with a revolutionary mindset have Power to the People to equally vibe to. For a general feel-good mood, Lovely Day has you covered.

Recording ‘On Lockdown’

In an era where recording live is seen as an expensive venture, 2Lock beat the odds to ensure On Lockdown had the finest of productions. Partnering with amazing musicians, the instrumentations came out stellar. Mostly, the musicians on the project are Ghana-based, however, Grammy Award Winner Paapa Nyarko (based in DC) blessed some of the songs with his experiences from playing with the Wailers. Ghanaian legend Zapp Mallet also brought magic to the basslines. However, the ingenious 2Lock took control of the song Caution by playing every instrument, as well as delivering the vocals.

While the world grabbled with the novel Corona Virus and its variants, the enterprising nature of creatives was tested. The EP derived its title from the first major lockdown in Ghana. A week after 2Lock started the production process, Ghana went on Lockdown due to the rise of Covid-19. For about 18 months, hard work and creativity were put to the ore. While that occurred, a reflective 2Lock compared almost 7years of relative obscurity to the restrictions due to Covid-19. The title, therefore, is two ponged.  So, around July 2021, On Lockdown was birthed.

On the timing of the release, the restrictions from Covid-19 have eased, new trends emanating from technology are gaining ground. More and more music lovers are turning to digital platforms for music. This presents an opportunity for every creative person to soar. 2Lock and his management, therefore, deemed it most appropriate to put out this EP.

Behind the album

For many, 2Lock is a familiar face and voice; and indeed, he is. Formerly known as Nana Fynn, and viewed as a Highlife artiste, many never knew his roots are reggae. In a brief conversation with him, he mentions;

“People have tagged me as a Highlife artiste; however, my roots have always been reggae”.

Despite being an amazing Highlife artist, his music back then was due to what the record wanted to promote. However, with his new label and creative freedom, he is going for the world stage cloaked as the real him, the reggae aficionado.

On Lockdown By 2Lock 2

With this new EP and a Change in name, many may want to know the reason behind it. Interestingly, the transition from Nana Fynn to 2Lock is borne of personal philosophy. It seeks to reconcile reality and wisdom.

According to the artist, humanity would thrive efficiently when wisdom is the order of the day. However, man has often failed to apply wisdom when faced with the illusion of reality. Greed and other negative attitudes appear to take the place of wisdom when a man is at a crossroad. He, therefore, goes by his new name because he desires a proper relationship between reality and wisdom.

The EP was produced (Mixed & Mastered) by himself; however, Zapp Mallet & Francis Osei of Groove House Studio made some inputs to get it finalized.

On Lockdown is definitely an EP that is carefully thought out. From the quality of production, vocals, to content, it is worth noting that the journey to conquer the world reggae stage has started. This masterpiece is under Brand Africa Music (label).

Listen, Watch & Download: Nana Muze features Teri Wiizi on a Love Classic.

Nana Muze & Teri Wiizi

Tuna’s very own, Teri Wiizi, has been featured in yet another soothing piece of music. The crooner joins his contemporary in requesting a lovely smile from a special someone.

About the song

The song, titled Juliet Smile is an Afro-Fusion joint that thrives on an infectious rhythm. The composition of the song also draws its prowess from the variety of music-related elements assembled.

With impeccable vocals, awe-inspiring production, and simple but beautiful live guitar works, Juliet Smile is that song capable of surviving a lifetime of Valentine’s Day celebrations.

Comparing their love to that of Romeo and Juliet, the two singers request a smile similar to that of Juliet.

Nana Muze

Who is this incredible singer?

Nana is a Ghanaian Afro-Highlife artiste. He’s honed the musical talent for a while; however, Juliet Smile is one he wants to make a statement with.

Teri Wiizi who often refers to himself as an Afro Beats artist has also been around for a while. Despite not putting out an album, he has released a number of covers, as well as collaborations.

For music lovers who may have followed him, one would admit a positive growth trajectory in his life as an artist.

A KiDi Reign, Kuami “feature” dominance, Gyakie Queendom and a Blacko Entry

Ghanaian Music is alive, and so are we. Over the last two years, as Covid-19 kept us largely at home, entertainment gave us some respite, but sweet holy sound—music—gave us somewhere to go. It transported us, mentally, into the pits or peaks of our emotions; to imagined escapes and unimagined adventures.

Some Artistes churned out some of their best work yet in 2021. There has been plenty fare ready for the dance floor, be the rave at home or at work, from chartbusters like Kuami Eugene through to singers like Abiana to Dj’s like Nektunez and some amazing new entrants into mainstream Ghanaian Music.

In 2021, Ghanaian music charted a new course, broke into world charts, filled event venues, and created household names. Last year saw KiDi follow up the success of “Say Cheese” with an amazing international breaking release – Touch it. Amaarae set and broke all sorts of records last year, “Chic” has simply been on fire. Yaw Tog caused a stir with his collaboration with Kwesi Arthur and UK International – Stormzy and toped it up with a BET Amplified feature as did Amaarae.

The year 2021 was an eventful one of releases, milestones, and recognition of Ghanaian music. As established talents like Sarkodie and Stonebwoy kept the pace with releases, new names like Black Sherif & Gyakie did enough to stake their claim with critically-acclaimed projects that shot them right atop the echelon.

Below is a list of the top 10 songs released in 2021 which had the most airplay. Do note that there are songs which might have done better than those which made it into the year’s chart but were released the year before.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/rNgkSXgqnms” title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

10. Praise – Fameye

Praise is easily one of the best records of 2021 and perhaps the best Fameye has delivered in his entire career. The song is simply a masterpiece, so well composed and arranged. If any tune could bring the dead back to life it would be the wonderful coral harmonies and melodies of this song doing the trick.

It is a song you cannot stop listening to, it’s a Praise of Fameye’s career, it is as though the rapper/singer sort to showcase his writing skill and exhibit all the music in him.

Praise shares the story of his life and could but for a few words pass for Gospel song of the year.

9. Biibi Besi – Kwame Yogot ft. Kuami Eugene

Biibi Besi is an absolute euphoric jam. Listening to the song, it seems almost criminal that Kuami Eugene and Kwame Yogot had never collaborated before. The ease with which two of today’s most revered songwriters share this track is astonishing—their voices the perfect complement in tone, timbre, power, and style.

The beautiful reggae tone track blends an afro and dance vibe which is off the hook. Yogot delivers his comic rap in a flawless manner. I’m convinced that they’re just trying to tie our brains into knots. There are tempo changes and random style left turns.

8. Echoke – S3fa ft. Mr. Drew

The Queen of Black Avenue Muzik, S3fa, served a hot dance dish with Mr. Drew on the ones and twos. This song was the party in itself as it became the heart of the dancefloor. Easily S3fa’s biggest hit and arguably the most successful song of her label, the song took her places and saw the singer dominate charts for weeks.

The song had an attention grabbing video and a beautiful dance to it. This song put S3fa on the music map and has had her chocked with shows.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/8f1hRd5S6ho” title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

7. Dollar on you – Kuami Eugene

Kuami Eugene reclaims his place as a bona fide hit maker with “Dollar On You”. His first release of 2021 was on steroids. He sings about treating his lover to nothing but money. In an Interview, the ‘Rockstar’ said “Dollar on you talks about the Significance of Sharing”.

The song quickly became a regular feature on radio, street corners, pubs and parties. Kuami’s showing after his “Son of Africa” album was strong and impressive. The song has a captivating afro dance vibe and was accompanied by an amazing star studded video.

It would certainly be safe to put your dollar on this outright banger.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/QQlUzS00dVg” title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

6. Yeeko – Okyeame Kwame ft. Kuami Eugene

In the hay days of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah there was a popular phrase used to describe him; “Nkrumah Never Dies” – This best describes Okyeame Kwame’s spell in the Ghanaian Music Industry. Most rappers ascend and over a decade and half lose their hold significantly. Kwame has been the exception to this rule. For over two decades, Okyeame Kwame has been relevant and churns out a huge hit every 3 years or so. 2021 was no different as he teamed with Lynx Entertainment’s Kuami Eugene to produce an outright street anthem

Anytime one has felt that the hot air balloon of confidence that accompany Kwame’s timely records seem to be deflating, the eccentric rapper pulls his magic wand and boom – a hit.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/OSbi2Jvls7A” title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

5. 1st Sermon – Black Sherif

Black Sherif has released 1st Sermon to the elation of an eager audience. The 3-minute drill project formed part of his “Road To The Tape” series. Several top entertainment personalities drooled over the progress of this fast-rising act. The release satisfied the thirst of music lovers as they waited impatiently for its release after leaked footages were extensively shared and greatly admired.

The song amplifies daily hustle, the need for loyalty and survival in the music business. Sherif got his congregates so drunk on his sermon that he became a house hold name overnight.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/-M8GrF2b7M0″ title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

4. Sore Remix – Yaw Tog ft. Stormzy & Kwesi Arthur

Yaw Tog hit a huge milestone with the remix of his chart-topping single ‘Sore’ featuring South London-based rapper Stormzy and Kwesi Arthur. With over 3.4 million streams on music streaming service Spotify by July, the song was the second behind Sarkodie’s biggest commercial hit song – Adonai which featured Castro with 17 million streams. This was the story until KiDi “Touched it”.

The music video for the song which was shot in Kumasi and directed by KooPoku Studios has over 5 million views on Youtube.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/o_WlT8WA1No” title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

3. 2nd Sermon – Black Sherif

Black Sherif’s introductory hit ‘First Sermon’ was only a sequel to the singular 2021 hit before, on and after arrival song – Second Sermon. The song depicts a raw and fearless street spiel, that blasted him to the status of a viral sensation.

The song was produced by Stallion and is ferried in aching desire and rebellious glamour. This proper hustlers anthem got the streets crazy and turned “Angels” to Blog Breakdown analysts.

The self-styled leader of Sad Boys Country – Kweku Frimpong has a delicate responsibility; thus far, he has kept to his promise of delivering nothing but trouble. The song has attracted the attention of several local and international artistes culminating in a remix with “the African Giant” – Burna Boy

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/jFdD3Y8mqPI” title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

2. Forever Remix – Gyakie ft. Omah Lay

This is perhaps the most criticized remix in 2021. “Forever” was doing great and I dare say loved by foes of the young talent. To many a pundit, it was unnecessary and thus energies and resources should have been directed towards another project.

However, months down the lane “Team Gyakie” has been proven right with the tune blowing the tightly shut and closely guarded Nigerian Music market wide open. It is one of the most Streamed foreign songs on the Nigerian Market. The video did awesome for the young talent and the original video is about 10million views shy of the remix which has some 23million views.

By September, the song had been Streamed some 5million times on Spotify alone. By end of year, she had become the most Streamed Ghanaian Female Artiste on Spotify.  The song has “forever” opened doors for the talent.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/q5URc13jOv0″ title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

1. Touch it – KiDi

This song was simply untouchable. It became the most Streamed Ghanaian song ever on Spotify and set all sorts of records after only a few months of release.

It is easily the most decorated song of the year. At the VGMA’s when KiDi said he would be back, little did we know that comeback was of a song and the height it would conquer. Touch it is back and in style. Here are a few records the song blessed the industry with…

21 million + streams on audio platforms

16.9 million+ views on YouTube

125+ million views on Tiktok

It’s #11 on Billboard World Digital Sales

It’s #7 on UK Afrobeat Chart

It’s #61 Global Shazam Chart

Trending in over 28 countries on Shazam

Charting in over 51 countries on Spotify

Charting in over 49 countries on Apple Music

Gospel Songstress Wegeiwor teases with First Love, ahead of EP

Wegeiwor Calls For Revival

2021 is almost done; and Gospel singer Wegeiwor calls for a revival in her new single, First Love. Christendom is at a point where the message of repentance and salvation appears to dwindle. Many latches on to the message of prosperity, and prophecies that seem to beef up their desires. Unfortunately, the riches that come with accepting Christ Jesus as Lord and saviour demand for the faithful to be repentant, pious, and ever willing to pursue Godliness.

About First Love

In this new song, First Love; Wegeiwor reiterates the challenges of the time, reminding all of whom is true. The simple message of repentance and avoiding a reliance on false messages is the driving force behind this impressive reggae tune.

First LOVE BY WEGEIWOR

For believers, First Love is the song that gets you asking yourself a pertinent question. “I’m I ready for the second coming of Christ?”. Call it a test-my-place in Christ song, and you won’t be faulted.

With production from another gospel great, Koda at Koded Studios, one can understand how the song hits the soul. First Love is the first single off a yet-to-be-released EP.

About Wegeiwor

Wegeiwor is an affable personality who has resigned her every interaction to an opportunity to preach. Despite her busy schedule as a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Business school, she makes it a point to preach the gospel in unconventional ways. Through her Foundation, Ex-Glo, she has supported students in deprived communities with items ranging from Furniture, Books to Sanitary Pads.

A major feature in all of this remains her call for people to rely on the Holy Spirit (freely given to Christians by Jesus Christ). To further reach the world, she has capitalized on her vocal strength to reach many through music. For her, the world is not just the beautiful cities but includes communities seen as unbelieving. Thus, she performs her music in languages that can easily be mistaken as heathen, especially when one considers mainstream gospel music in Ghana.
