Why the Outlandish North2South Experience?

The two events are meant to solidify the relationships between artists and create avenues for more collaborative works. We are mindful that record labels in our part of the world are disappearing, and artists are more and more expected to do everything on their own.

However, if musicians can access the business knowledge of the music industry and work more with other artists, their stature and experience will be built up to new heights.

The Outlandish North2South Experience is an initiative powered by the Khaya Language Translation App, supported by Algorine Inc and Isolirium Entertainment

This set of events is a follow-up to the successful OFFGRID event staged by Isolirium Entertainment at East Legon in Accra.

All you need to know about Khaya: Africa’s Number 1 Language AI App is Here

What is Khaya App?

Khaya

Khaya Language Translation and Speech Recognition AI is an app dedicated to translating and transcribing African Languages. Since its release in 2021, the developers, Ghana NLP and Algorine, have strived to ensure the App sees more and more improvement. From user-friendliness to the quality of translations, Khaya AI has continued to improve. Due to consistent hard work, the App’s AI’s Yoruba text translator outperformed Google Translate in 2022.

New Languages Added

Building on the success of the App, the developers of the App have augmented its usefulness by adding more African Languages. Overall, the newly added languages will serve over 15 million Africans in Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Kenya – none of whom are presently served by tools like Google Translate.

Previously, it provided the world with Twi, Ga, Dagbani, and Yoruba Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) capabilities and Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Twi, and Yoruba neural machine learning text translators. In the most recent update, Gurene aka Frafra, a Ghanaian language, and Kikuyu, Kimeru, and Luo (all Kenyan languages), have been added to the text translation system. The developers collaborated with the Harvard African Language School Professor John Mugane, who is Kenyan, to curate data and train models for the Kenyan languages.

This new addition is a testament to Algorine’s and Ghana NLP’s quest to ensure Khaya AI’s relevance remains unparalleled.

The Reason for developing the App

The app is to help preserve African Languages through advanced technology. Languages are going extinct by the day – this App is a sure way to teach Africans, African Diasporans, and anyone else who wants to learn to understand African languages. This will help ensure their continued use in everyday life.

You Make Me Wonder is that 1 out of the World Collaboration

You Make me Wonder

Genesis of You Make me Wonder

For an artist whose forte remains social consciousness, one may be tempted to place love at the bottom of themes they may rap and perform about. However, the “Did you think” rapper surprised fans with a Highlife song.

The song features two other musicians. Ghanaian Highlife legend Ofori Amponsah, and Tamale’s sensational singer Jerry Kanjarga bring the lover boy in them to “You make me wonder”.

The song has gone way past an audio recording and culminated in a very eye-catching video directed by celebrated Ghanaian Director Yaw Skyface.

It is not an everyday occurrence to get a legend like Ofori Amponsah aka Mr. All 4 Real on a song. It is therefore not surprising how Dr Pushkin went all love at this opportunity.

The music video is set in a beach house along the coast of Southern Ghana. Featuring some of Ghana’s finest models and video vixens, Dr Pushkin seeks affirmation from his lover as he conquers the world with hits.

The beautiful images complement the soothing lyrics of the musicians, birthing an impressive piece of the music video.

You Make Me Wonder is Dr. Pushkin’s first fusion with the Highlife Genre. As a rapper pushing an Afro-Fusion movement, the collaboration definitely furthers his quest to not only be a stellar performer but a versatile one – someone who appreciates multiple genres and moods.

This song is off Dr Pushkin’s Outlandish album recently released across all digital platforms.

Hajia Police calls for commitment to Ramadan in New Song

Hajia Police and her responsibility

As a convention, Hajia Police has for the past few years blessed the Islamic Community and the general populace with Ramadan tunes and this year is no different. To help in the spiritual journey and to remind each and every Muslim of their sacred commitment and call to do good and provide for the less privileged; the Afro-Islamic Genre originator has employed the services of Mentor Winner, Lynx Entertainment Signee and 24th VGMA Unsung Nominee DSL.

Hajia Police

Who is Hajia Police?

The Best Ghanaian female motor rider once again updates our playlists with this lovely masterpiece titled Al Wakat (Ramadan). The song entreats all to pray, forgive, give, and observe the holy month of Ramadan. The track is available in all digital stores and is accompanied by a video.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the most sacred times for Muslims. During this month, Muslims observe a strict daily fast from dawn until sunset. They are not allowed to eat or drink, not even water, during these daylight hours; they also abstain from romance, sex and have to abstain from looking at the opposite sex lustfully. Fasting is a private act of worship engendering nearness to God, but it is also a form of spiritual discipline and a means to empathizing with those less fortunate.

The meaning of Al Wakat

Al Wakat (Ramadan) is about educating all on the importance of fasting not only during the month of Ramadan, but all through life. Fasting makes one holy and maintains a relationship with God.

Some, he has won, and others, he couldn’t convert. Despite several nominations in different schemes in Ghana, his three wins at VGMA 2017 and 2018 remain the most impactful. He was voted the VGMA New Artiste of the year in 2017. In 2018, he returned to the VGMAs and won Song of the Year and Hiplife Artiste of the year. The musician celebrated his 10th year as a mainstream musician in 2022 with a huge concert at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.

His latest Music Video is Block and Delete.

Suffice it to say; his arch-rival made it to this Top 10 list.

2 – Wiyaala (800,000)

Number 2 of the Top 10 Musicians From Northern Ghana is Wiyaala. She is one of Ghana’s most energetic performers. Through the years, the Funsi-Based Ghanaian enigma has proven to be a thrill on every stage. Her mainstream career started with Touch My Body, a song that suggested a raunchy artiste in the making. However, she immediately strayed from that persona. She took on the character of an African Lioness whose sound is comparable only to greats like Youssou Ndour, Angelique Kidjoe, and Fella Kuti. Her prowess has been the soul-filled music she churns out and her impressive stagecraft. Often performing with a Live Band, she has mastered bringing something refreshing to each stage.

Despite starting in the Upper West Regional Capital, Wiyaala had bigger dreams. Looking to establish a national career, she made the journey to Accra to audition for “Stars of the Future” and “Vodafone Icons (mixed Edition) .”When her group (Black and Peach) won the Vodafone ICONS mixed edition, she was set for the world of music. After releasing “Wonkoa” as a Band, she left the group and started a solo career.

Wiyaala

Wiyaala has released several singles with three Albums. Tuma, her first album, was released under Echoe Sounds in Wa. However, her albums “Wiyaala” and Sissala Goddess, were released under Djimba World Records, where she is currently signed. Her singles include Make Me Dance, Touch My Body, Village Sex, When The Lord Get Us Ready, and Africa, among others.

Beyond music, the ever-smiling creative has had a stint on TV and Film.

She’s performed at WOMAD UK, Shambala, Hull Freedom Festival, and several other international events. She also headlined the 15th London African Music Festival in 2017.

In 2018, Wiyaala was selected as one of BBC News’s “African Women We Celebrate.”

Even though she is an entertainer, Wiyaala uses her music and time to impact society. She has partnered on projects with UNICEF Ghana and the Government of Ghana in campaigns against child marriages, child poverty, and health and sanitation.

3Music Awards in March 2021 recognized Wiyaala as part of the Top 30 Most Influential Women in Music.

He has ventured beyond Tamale and filled venues far away, including Accra.

He burst onto the mainstream sometime in 2014 with his “Boussu” album. Even though the buzz was good for an upcoming artiste, his subsequent works would earn him a spot in music from Northern Ghana. His second album, “Oshihila Nkpe” (2015), furthered his quest to dominate.

While preparing his third album, his rivalry with Fancy Gadam hit a crescendo. Fans were at each of both artists taunted each other. While Fancy Gadam’s fans suggested Maccasio could never fill the stadium, Maccasio’s fans thought otherwise. Eventually, Maccasio’s Peace Concert settled the score as the event in August 2016 was well attended by almost 20000 fans. Later in 2017, Maccasio again chose the same venue for his 2017 “Ninsala” album launch. He then dubbed the event “The Too Big Concert.” At the said event, King Maccasio, as some fans call him, brought in Shatta Wale as a gift to fans. As expected, the stadium was filled. The pretty boy rapper then marshalled his fans for the “Northern Explosion Concert” in Accra. It became the event that cemented his stature as the biggest rapper from the North of Ghana. This feat brought Maccasio to the limelight across Ghana. And his music began to spread.

In 2019 and 2022, Maccasio released “Zero to Hero” and “Glory” albums, respectively. Colossal launch events at the ALiu Mahama Sports Stadium characterized the two releases.

Innovative ExGlo Foundation Sparks Positive Change In 2 Towns

ExGlo Foundation shines Bright.

In a spirit of giving and teaching how to fish, ExGlo Foundation once again stepped out into the regions. This time around, the beneficiaries were the Tamale Girls Senior High School in the Northern Region & Srafa D/A Basic School/community, in the Central Region. As an organization operating on the principle of meeting the real needs of people, the activities in these two regions were based on a needs assessment conducted earlier in the year.

ExGlo Foundation has previously been involved in paying school fees for students from deprived communities, donating school supplies such as tables and chairs for staff and students, health screenings and talks, career guidance, and equipment for processing raw materials such as shea nuts, among other things. The foundation continues to strive in diversifying its impact projects and supporting livelihood ventures.

Excited Students welcome ExGlo Foundation

ExGlo Foundation in Tamale

The needs assessment found that young girls in Tamale had a high tendency to start their own businesses after high school when they are not able to continue their education. However, with little to no skill acquisition, this desire did not always materialize for people who lacked financial resources. ExGlo Foundation was there to fill that hole by teaching these girls for free.

A Student of Tamale Girls SHS exhibit her product

ExGlo Foundation in Srafa

The situation for the Srafa community was different yet precarious. In a farming community, girls unable to pursue higher education join their parents on the farms to support themselves and their families; and given that farming is a seasonal occupation, the women become idle when the season is over. With most women being housewives, skills acquisition could put them on the path equip to financial freedom.

The Goodies ExGlo Foundation delivered

The ExGlo Foundation team visited these two regions on different dates; on the 12th of November 2022, students of Tamale Girls Senior High School received their skills training in Liquid Soap and Bead making.

The ExGlo team later travelled to the Central region on the 18th of November 2022 to visit the Srafa Community. The visitation was in 2 phases. The first phase was the donation of some essential needs of their basic school to facilitate learning as well as the provision of materials to enhance good menstrual hygiene. Items donated to the school included markerboards, sanitary pads, towels, soaps, African print cloths (to cover themselves with it in the washroom when changing), dozens of panties and a cupboard was delivered.

Pupils of Srafa D/A & ExGlo Foundation

menstrual hygiene items can be kept. ExGlo foundation also repaired the spoilt hand wash basin in the washrooms and fixed the markerboards as well.

The second phase involved the entire community, but primarily the women. They were taught how to make shampoo, liquid soap, and pastries, which was a huge success. The women were equipped with these skills to help them generate extra income to support themselves and their families.

This year’s Skills Development Training was sponsored by St John’s Hospital and Fertility Centre, Tantra Hill roundabout, as part of their corporate social responsibility, Best Western Premier, Accra Airport Hotel, and other benevolent people, ExGlo once again moved to impact lives. Special thanks to all who supported making sure these two programs were a success, especially Mr Michael Sandow Ali (the chairman of the board), Mr Abeiku Aggrey Santana, Prof. Joshua Y. Abor, Prof. Mrs Vera Fiador, and other family & friends.

Despite targeting the Central Region, Northern Region, Upper East Region, and Upper West Region for the Skills Development Training of 2022, ExGlo had to limit the number of locations to 2 due to financial constraints. However, the organization continues to seek support from the general public, other NGOs, and organizations to help execute this cause and reach out to more beneficiaries.

ExGlo has been dedicated to ensuring that vulnerable people in the rural areas of Ghana, especially the Central Region, Upper East, Upper West, and Northern Regions, enjoy access to decent education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood projects to improve their lives. This mantle it has carried since 2012 has always been timely and ingenious.

This year’s Skills Development Program was coordinated and led by Ms. Nancy Abena Manko, the project manager for the foundation, with oversight provided by the Executive Director, Dr. Patience Aseweh Abor.

Volunteers for this year’s projects were;

Ms.Priscilla Wiah

Ms. Hannah Ampomah

Ms.Winifred Bakari Soale

Ms. Rahama Issahaku

Ms.Jennifer Yaa Andorful Wilson

Nana Tawiah Gaisie

Mr. Kwesi Ohene-Djan

One of the Accra-based designers expressed his joy and delightfulness at seeing the audience still glued to their seats as late as 12 midnight when people would begin to leave at about 9 pm in Accra when the show has not ended. The atmosphere and reception of the people of Tamale were a new experience for him and this overwhelming. According to him, this was an indication that they were really welcomed in Tamale with their fashion.

The missing vibe in the organization’s structure was the conspicuous absence of women. In an interview with Abdul Raafi Mohammed on Sanatu Zambang Hotspot Live, the organizers bemoaned the difficulty of getting women involved in working with them but they hope to improve upon representation in the subsequent editions.

They also expressed some difficulties in training the models. They had to run shifts for the trainees because most of them were not regular and kept missing days in training. This made their work very difficult.

Talking of the sponsorship, the organizers admitted that, they had a tough time getting people and organizations to sponsor the program.  They reiterated that most cooperate bodies would ask for sponsorship letters but when the letters are given out to them, they would decline to grant any sponsorship.

In organizing this fashion show, they noted that most of their sponsorships came from friends and family members, which was totally unacceptable and discouraging for the growth and success of the program.

One of the points that were also highlighted in the interview was the fact that designers are being limited by clients says Abdul Raafi. Fashion designers are not being challenged by clients to be creative and come out with their own designs. Clients come to seek services demanding replicas of dresses they see on the internet. But the panelist was of a different view. They said it was the duty of these fashion designers to educate their clients about the fashion business and the work they actually do.

DND Goes Hard on “Witchcraft” through Rap; with KAMULIMULISIGN

Who are the Dope Guyz Empire or DND?

Dope Guyz Empire better known as DND is Navrongo’s foremost musical duo. The 2 musicians have carved a niche for themselves with a constant release of heart-piercing and thought-provoking songs & lyrics. DND Rapnaygar and DND Alonzo make up this impressive music duo.

Their music is often based on their surroundings and the experiences. With this new song, the musical duo has once again highlighted what permeates in their turf – witchcraft.

While others may perceive witchcraft to be an abstract delusion, there is a wide belief in the super-natural in most parts of Africa, and for that matter Navrongo in Ghana.

What Dope Guyz Empire Address in their song ‘Kamulimulisign’

DND of the Dope Guyz

Without delving into what is traditionally thought to be witchcraft, the 2 creatives threw wit to a beat by suggesting forms of witchcraft. The sensitive nature of this thought-of-a-song is worth acknowledging.

Titled ‘KAMULIMULISIGN’, the song addresses some evil doings in our societies. It emphasises the fact that hatred, jealousy and envy are the causes and sources of human suffering, and these bad deeds are the fertile ground for the activities of the rampant witchcraft and its adverse effects on humanity and society as a whole.

Many innocent lives have been lost, as well as destroying people with good minds for development. The song questions why witches are only and passionately interested in killing and destroying great people who have good intentions and the ability to bring development.

This song however can be seen as controversial, as it does not directly address witches, but rather an insect (specifically, a night flier).

However, since witches are said to be flying at night for their meetings and other activities, it is clear the witch here is metaphorically represented in the life and nature of a night flier (KAMULIMULISIGN).
