Development Expert Advocates for the Creation of Smock Village in Yendi

Dr. Nathaniel Nii Sasah Adams Junior, a development expert, has proposed the establishment of a smock village in Yendi to promote the local smock industry and provide economic opportunities for the region’s residents.

He highlighted that the Northern Region, particularly Yendi, is the heart of smock production in Ghana, but no centralised market or village is dedicated to the craft. Dr. Adams believes that creating a smock village would not only boost the smock trade but also significantly enhance tourism and preserve the cultural heritage of the people of Dagbon.

Dr. Adams made the proposal during the inauguration of the Yendi Youth Parliament (YYP) in Yendi last Saturday. The event was organised under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project, which aims to empower young people and strengthen their involvement in local governance and development initiatives.

Funded by the World Bank, the SOCO project, through its Youth Engagement and Social Cohesion subcomponent, supports youth parliaments in 48 districts across northern Ghana, allowing marginalised and at-risk youth to participate in national discourse.

In his speech, Dr. Adams, founder of the Northern College of Science and Technology, urged members of the Yendi Youth Parliament to take the lead in advocating for the Smock Village Initiative. He encouraged them to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the SOCO project and traditional authorities, to realise the vision.

“I challenge you as young people to champion this initiative, liaise with the SOCO project, traditional authorities, and other relevant bodies to bring this vision to life,” he stated.

Dr. Adams also personally pledged GH¢20,000 to support the project and called on all relevant stakeholders to join the cause.

He further encouraged members of the Yendi Youth Parliament to advocate for development and prioritise the community’s interests over personal or partisan considerations.

Abdul Jalel Alhassan, the Yendi Municipal Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA), shared that the Yendi Youth Parliament would serve as a platform for young people to voice their concerns and contribute to national development. He urged the members to stay determined and work hard to promote local governance and development.

Plan International Ghana’s Projects Empower Communities in Northern Ghana

Plan International Ghana recently organised a field trip for selected journalists from Northern Ghana to explore its operational communities and witness firsthand the profound impact of its interventions in education, water, sanitation, hygiene, and other vital areas.

The team visited Sagadugu Nos . 1 and 2 and Mimima in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region. These areas have seen transformative projects that have significantly improved the lives of children and their wider communities.

Plan International Ghana on the field

At Sagadugu Nos. 1 and 2, the journalists observed the positive effects of Plan International Ghana’s child sponsorship programme, which has supported approximately 636 children. They also visited a mechanised water system installed by the organisation, which enhances the community’s access to clean water.

Community members also expressed appreciation for the household latrines and the girl-friendly latrine built by Plan International. According to residents, these facilities have improved hygiene among girls and contributed to better overall sanitation.

Furthermore, the team was introduced to the organisation’s community-based initiatives, including School Health Clubs, Natural Leaders, Water Sanitation Management Teams (WSMTs), and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). The journalists later engaged with the “REAL Fathers” club, which promotes positive parenting and works to reduce violence against children.

The Chief of Guabulga, Salifu Mahama Tampuri, expressed gratitude for the “SHE LEADS” project, which empowers girls to take leadership roles while reducing early marriages and teenage pregnancies. He emphasised the importance of continued support for girls to pursue their education.

“When we provide these interventions and they get to senior high school, some of them come out with good results. But advancing to the next stage becomes a problem because their parents cannot support them, and that is where I get worried,” he shared.

Mathilda Rubabatu Manlokia, a 31-year-old beneficiary of the SHE LEADS project, shared her empowering story in an exclusive interview with GBCNEWS. She credited Plan International Ghana for changing her life and helping her secure a job as a Project Officer with Songtaba in the North East Region, where she manages around 200 girls across six clubs.

“If parents push their girls to marriage, it limits them from achieving greater heights, so I urge parents not to limit their daughters to the kitchen,” she said.

“Oh, Plan International, until we are all equal. I am super proud because if not for Plan International, by now I would have been limited to the kitchen,” Miss Manlokia added, beaming with pride.

In Mimima, the team visited the second cohort of the Alternative Learning Programme (ALP) for out-of-school children. During the visit, 28 learners—17 females and 11 males—were engaged in basic literacy and numeracy lessons in Mampruli.

Abdulai Abdallah, the Project Coordinator for the Ghana Education Outcome Project (GEOP), highlighted that after nine months, these learners would transition into formal schooling.

“The way this project is run, parents are not required to buy teaching and learning materials; yours is to commit yourself and enrol your ward in the programme. From books, pencils, erasers, everything is provided by the project, so parents who otherwise could not enrol their children because of a lack of these learning materials have taken an interest,” he explained.

The buy-in rate for this project has been exceptionally high, and parents have observed that once their children transition to formal school, they are supported throughout their education.

The team also visited the newly established SPAD Adolescent Drop-in Centre at Mimima, a facility designed to provide a safe, inclusive space for adolescents to learn, grow, and develop leadership skills. The centre offers comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education, governance, and civic education.

This field trip highlighted Plan International Ghana’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of children and communities across Northern Ghana. The organisation’s multifaceted interventions continue to make a significant and lasting impact on the region’s development.

Upper West Regional Minister Urges MMDCEs to Strive for Effective delivery of mandate

The Upper West Regional Minister, Mr. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, urges newly appointed Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to remain within their jurisdictions. This is necessary to ensure the effective delivery of their mandate.

“Let me make it clear to you that it is not acceptable and will not be tolerated for any MMDCE to reside outside your district and commute daily to your district, you must live with your people, understand their challenges first hand and be accessible, your visibility is not only a symbol of leadership but a catalyst for accountability and trust,” he stated.

Mr. Lwanga made this statement during the swearing-in ceremony of nine MMDCEs. They were confirmed by their regional assemblies. The ceremony took place in Wa, the regional capital.

The Minister emphasised that he would not condone a situation where MMDCES lived outside their districts. He insisted that MMDCES need to be living among the people they serve, not commuting daily. He stressed that anyone found guilty of this would face legal consequences.

He also urged the newly sworn-in MMDCEs to visit their communities regularly. They should make sure to visit especially the more remote areas. Building strong relationships with community leaders and residents is essential.

The Minister highlighted the importance of addressing critical issues. These include sanitation, education, and road construction. The Minister also emphasized regulating unauthorized building activities and providing potable water.

“To be an MMDCE is not just managing an office. It is to inspire hope where there is despair, to champion equity where there is exclusion, to build roads, schools, clinics, and markets—yes—but also to build trust, integrity, and unity, your decisions today will echo across generations, you cannot afford to fail, you must work with the departments of the Assembly and opinion leaders,” he stated.

He further urged the MMDCEs to follow due process. He advised them to collaborate closely with their District Coordinating Directors. They should also work with other technical officers to achieve success.

The Wa High Court Judge, Justice Yusif Assibey, led the nine confirmed MMDCEs. They took the oath of office. They also pledged allegiance.

The nine MMDCEs include Alhaji Nuru Issah Danwana (Wa Municipal Assembly). James Wor represents the Daffiama Bussie Issa District. Richard Wulo serves Wa West. Alhaji Adams Muazu is with Lawra Municipal. Anthony Ziniel is from the Nandom Municipality.
