About My Time by Dr Pushkin and Ataman Nikita

Performed over a resounding Drum and Bass dominated instrumentation, the two artists bring their respective roots to the fore. Ataman Nikita’s RnB background is further elaborated with an impressive soul-lifting vocal performance on “My Time”. Recounting the several instances that have culminated in the creation of My Time, Ataman Nikita reiterates that he’s never desired anything more than churning out amazing music.

Dr Pushkin comes in hard with bars that exude resilience and his unfettered rise as an enviable rapper. Telling the story of hurdles in his pursuits, the rapper reminds everyone that he isn’t here for the moment but for the long haul. The several releases, including the “Maths, Beats and Flow” album, The Outlandish album, and several singles, were just a precursor to now. Weaving through the My Time beat dexterously, the rapper’s use of literary devices like foreshadowing and alliterations in an impressive rhyme scheme attests to the fact that he’s laced his boots for this moment and beyond.

My Time was released today, 17th December, by Isolirium Entertainment as the last tune from the label for 2024. 2025 is set to be another jolly year for the label. Its two frontline artists have been impressive with several releases. While My Time crowns it, the other releases have been phenomenal musical masterpieces.

The initiative, held in Sagnarigu, forms part of GIFEC’s broader digital inclusion agenda, which aims to empower women with digital skills and reduce the gender gap in the ICT sector. The programme concluded on Tuesday with a renewed call for the beneficiaries to use their newly acquired knowledge to impact their communities.

Addressing participants at the closing ceremony, Madam Francisca Adjei, Head of Corporate Affairs at GIFEC, encouraged the women to embrace their new roles as technology leaders and community change-makers. “You have not only gained digital skills, but you have also prepared yourselves as digital ambassadors. This is how we bridge the gender divide in ICT,” she said.

“I commend GIFEC for this initiative and also thank our partners and stakeholders for taking you through this journey over the past two weeks.”

Madam Adjei further urged the women to carry out their responsibilities confidently and purposefully. “You are now trainers,” she emphasized. “You are going to make meaningful contributions to your societies.”

Participants expressed heartfelt appreciation to GIFEC for the opportunity, describing the training as life-changing. They pledged to apply their skills to support digital growth in their local communities and justify the investment made in their development.

The ICT Training of Trainers programme is a key component of GIFEC’s mission to ensure that underserved and marginalized populations—especially women—are included in Ghana’s digital transformation journey.

Regarded as a pioneer in the contemporary music scene of the Northern Region of Ghana, Tuba Zaks has teamed up with Maccasio to electrify the feet of fans. On a song titled “Di’Gbaama”, the singer partnered with his Zola mate Maccasio to prove he still has it.

The Early years

Tuba Zaks, born Basit Zakaria, is a Ghanaian musician and painter from the Northern Region of Ghana. Born in the 1980s in Tamale, Tuba Zaks attended elementary and primary school at Bagabaga Primary School in 1989 and junior secondary school at Ridge Junior Secondary School between 1995 and 1998. Tuba Zaks – the rise to prominence

Tuba Zak released his first debut album “ATEMUDA” featuring Batman, now known as Samini. The album also featured Nana King. However, despite making inroads onto the music scene, he briefly focused on his talent as a painter(Artist) due to a conflict in the Northern Region. These paintings became a source of revenue as he honed his talent amidst the conflict. When the conflict was eventually resolved, Tuba Zaks returned to the music industry with the group Tuba Clan, with three other artists. They released the album “BONDITO”, which connotes “Hard to find money”. Back then, it was easy to track music sales; the album reportedly sold over 25000 copies on Cassette Tapes and CDs.

2005 the same Tuba Clan returned with their second album, “DAKOLI”, meaning ‘Bachelor’, on their record label. This album sold over 20,000 tapes and CDs in Ghana. A year later, in 2006, they released a video CD compilation of both Tuba Zaks and Tuba Clan music. This compilation sold over 35,000 copies across Ghana.

Going Solo

Tuba Zaks decided to go solo after a year and started recording his singles. His first single, “IT SHALL BE WELL,” featured Blakk Rasta and Mugees of R2Bees.

The musician then released another hit single, “DON’T TRUST WOMEN,” featuring Mugees of R2Bees and D-Flexx, which received impressive rotation. He was eventually signed to the Last Two Music Group and set to be unleashed after Ayigbe Edem’s (Edem) “Volta Regime” album. Unfortunately, as of the time of writing this article, very little is known about the aftermath of that signing. In March 2011, Tuba Zaks travelled to London and performed at the 54th Ghana Independence celebrations in the UK, which Akwaaba UK Jam Promotions organised.

A Legend still thriving.

Tuba Zaks has been recognised for his contributions to the music industry, receiving the Artist of the Decade award at the Northern Entertainment Awards.
In 2020, Tuba Zaks released the single “Only You,” featuring Zeal of VVIP and LXG from Sierra Leone. The song received significant attention and was promoted by artists like Maccasio and Fancy Gadam. He also has another collaboration with Zeal titled “Tabaaya”.

Tuba Zak is currently based in the United States of America. He also leads Zola Music & Cultural Group, a collective that promotes Northern Ghanaian culture through music. The group has collaborated with notable artists such as Rocky Dawuni, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy. In 2023, they launched the Northern Ghana Cultural Festival (NorGhaFest), a world tour using art and entertainment to promote peace and unity.

Is this a list of New releases?

No. Smock Rhythms is not limited to new releases. It is a selection of some of the finest songs we hear from artists in the North of Ghana. Language and genre are not primary determiners. Our discretion is absolutely down to the quality of the sound, the song’s universal appeal, and the vocal performance. The listed songs are not based on a hierarchy.

Is this about the Northern Region?

No. thesavannaonline acknowledges the battle with appreciating the varied regions and ethnicities of Northern Ghana. However, the North of Ghana refers to the three traditional regions of the Upper East, Upper West, and Upper East Region. This implies that we now cover the Upper West, Upper East, Northern, North East, and Savanna regions.

Which artists or regions are a priority?

We do not prioritise any region or set of artists. We curate based on what we can access or see online across multiple platforms. However, we invite artists and their management to share links with us whenever they have some releases. It is not a guarantee that we will feature it on a particular list. However, it adds to the rich database we would be cutting. At 1 point or the other, we may feature some of the songs.

What do we seek to achieve?

We seek to augment the selection process of Deejays and show hosts for their playlists. We also believe music lovers can add songs to their own playlists through these weekly updates. It becomes a win-win for fans and artists.

When does Smock Rhythms begin?

Our first list goes out on May 9, 2025. It will consist of a blog post and an audiovisual representation of the selections.

We anticipate that this initiative will be embraced, and once again, www.thesavannaonline.com will highlight the music from Northern Ghana. thesavanna jam of the week will also make a return to radio soon.
