Upper East Gets First Female Registrar of Births and Deaths – Madam Ismatu Yahaya

In a moment that has inspired many across the region, Madam Ismatu Yahaya has officially become the first woman to serve as Regional Registrar of Births and Deaths in Northern Ghana, taking over the Upper East Regional office after the exit of Mr. John Yalmon.

Her story is not just a promotion it is a journey of resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment. For years, Madam Ismatu Yahaya worked tirelessly through the ranks of the Births and Deaths Registry (BDR), gathering experience that shaped her into a respected and effective leader. Before this historic appointment, she served as the Deputy Regional Director of Births and Deaths in the Northern Region, where her dedication and work ethic were admired by many.

Growing up in a strong Islamic home, Madam Ismatu held tightly to her values,  faith, humility, and service. She faced storms, setbacks, and moments that could have discouraged her, but she stayed focused. She kept pushing. She kept believing. And today, all of it has paid off.

Her personal mantra, “What men can do, women can equally do and even better,” has guided her throughout her journey. Her achievement stands as a shining reminder to every young girl chasing her dream: don’t stop, don’t bow out, don’t give up.

Supporting her in the Upper East Region is Mr. Sanao Yahaya Mantani, formerly the Deputy Registrar in the Upper West Region, who now joins her as deputy.

The atmosphere at the BDR office in Upper East is filled with joy and optimism. Staff members have pledged their full support as she begins her administration. Smiles filled the room as she introduced her policies, promising a smooth, efficient, and people-centered leadership.
