Ganlagrum connected to national grid as 47 more Bongo communities await power

Residents of Ganlagrum in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region have been connected to the national electricity grid, and 47 more communities and facilities in the district have been approved for similar extensions, A1 Radio reports.
The connection was facilitated by the Member of Parliament for Bongo, Charles Bawaduah, who told residents during a visit to the community that the government had approved the wider extension programme.
Residents who spoke to A1 Radio said the arrival of power would improve daily life and give small businesses room to grow. One resident said the community now felt fully part of the country.
The MP listed communities and locations due to benefit, including Nyariga, Amikabiisi, Kadari, Tindongo, Goo, Widongo, Lungu, Ayourpia, Yekine, Akamo, Yaka, Akundoo, Apeliga and Asakule, as well as parts of Beo and areas around Bongo Kunkua, Tarongo and Apuwongo. Public facilities on the list include the Akire Kunkua CHPS compound and the Bongo Soe Herbal Centre.
No timelines were given for when work in the listed communities will begin or be completed, and the report did not state the cost of the projects, the number of households connected at Ganlagrum, or the role of the Electricity Company of Ghana or the Ministry of Energy.
For rural health posts such as CHPS compounds, a reliable grid connection matters beyond lighting: it supports cold storage for vaccines and medicines and makes night-time emergency care easier to deliver.
The Bongo District lies north of Bolgatanga, the regional capital, along the border with Burkina Faso, and most of its people live in scattered farming communities where extending power lines over long distances adds to the cost of connection.
TheSavannaOnline will follow up on the timelines for the remaining communities.
