The President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, has told members in the Upper East Region that the union will not rule out industrial action if talks fail to deliver outstanding conditions of service.

She was speaking at a mini durbar of GRNMA members in the Bongo District, according to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), which reported the meeting on November 3. She was accompanied by members of the association’s National Executive Committee, including First Vice President Samuel Alagora Akolgo.

What is still outstanding

According to the GNA report, payment of the book and research allowance for nurse educators has reached the final finance approval stage. Discussions are still ongoing with the relevant authorities on rural and on-call allowances for eligible members.

Mrs Ofori-Ampofo said some entitlements, including the uniform allowance, fuel allowance and support for PIN and AIN renewal, had already been implemented following the association’s industrial action last year.

She said the GRNMA is engaging the Ministry of Health and facility managers to implement everything in the members’ collective agreement. Strike action, she stressed, is not the association’s first choice, but the union would consider it if dialogue failed to produce results. No deadline was announced.

Support for members

The GRNMA President also encouraged members to earn Continuing Professional Development points through free webinars and online platforms, and said the association is improving its communication channels so members can more easily access forms, documents and employment information.

She said the association’s work is guided by its 2026–2030 strategic plan, which focuses on governance, professional development, member welfare, advocacy and partnerships.

Rural and on-call allowances are of particular interest to nurses and midwives in the Upper East and other Northern regions, where many health workers serve in remote facilities with limited staff. The Ministry of Health had not publicly responded to the remarks at the time of writing.
