The Dagaaba and Frafra friendly games is a cultural soiree born of a cordial relationship between two ethnic groups. It is an event which promises to be yet another fun-filled edition. With participants from across the Greater Accra Region and beyond, it remains that rare gathering of people from the two unique ethnicities.

Characteristic of previous editions, the one-day program is packed with exciting activities for people of different ages. Notable activities for the day include volleyball, sack race, tug of peace, and the ultimate decider, football. Each activity will have a Men and Women edition.

On the cultural side, the Dagaaba and Frafra friendly games will feature a heavy dose of cultural display. The display will span musical performances, traditional drumming and dance sessions, and a variety of traditional cuisines from the Dagaaba and Frafra groups. There will also be an exhibition of artifacts and regalia peculiar to the two groups. Notable among the artifacts will be Smocks, the xylophone, and other items made of leather and smock material.

The bond between the two ethnic groups.

The bond between the two ethnic groups is said to be borne of the fact that they have one ancestry. However, due to migration, one group moved to the Upper West Region of Ghana and the other to the Upper East. There is also a story of two brothers going on a journey; at a point, hunger sets in, and the only choice is to make a meal of their companion dog.

A disagreement, however, ensued over when to boil or roast the meat; they eventually divided the carcass into two, leaving the head for later. Somehow, the head went missing. That quest to find the head led to the cordiality they currently enjoy as two ethnic groups. Also, the loss of the head created a teasing situation which has led to this cordiality. The Dagaaba and Frafra are believed to represent either of the brothers who shared the dog-meat.

Who are the Dagaaba and Frafra?

The Dagaaba are sometimes referred to as the Dagaba. They are an ethnic group in the Upper West Region of Ghana. They are mainly from Nandom and Lawra districts. The Dagaaba are a part of the Mole-Dagbani cluster of ethnic groups. Dagaare is the language spoken by the Dagaabas.

The Frafra are also an ethnic group from the Upper East Region of Ghana. However, some communities are extending into Burkina Faso. They speak Gurune, sometimes referred to as Frafra. Notable towns include Bolgatanga, Bongo, Tongo, and several others.

The two ethnic groups are believed to have come from one ancestor.

The ultimate prize

Through the years, the Dagaaba – Frafra friendly games have had a unique prize on the event. The ultimate winner is always given a Puppy. The prize has sparked several controversies amongst animal lovers and cultural enthusiasts. While Animal rights activists think that using a puppy as a trophy is barbaric, cultural enthusiasts advocate tolerance for different cultural practices. However, since the prize does not break any laws, it is safe to say sentiments haven’t succeeded in chastising this age-long tradition of a puppy prize at this novel event.

The Dagaaba – Frafra Friendly games have become a mainstay for most indigenes of the two ethnic groups in Accra. It presents a unique opportunity to enjoy the culture and fraternize with relatives. It also enhances the cordial relationship the two ethnicities have enjoyed for centuries. Because these two groups are from different regions in Ghana, the solidified friendship is exemplary.

A very interesting narrative about the Dagaaba and the Frafra playmates relationships and how it came about.
I think we need to learn and get to know more about roots or where we are coming from.
Through these annual fun games, other groups or people from the different backgrounds would get to know and understand the cultures and traditions of other ethnic groups, and why they do what they do.
I wish the two sides an advanced and successful annual games.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has extended the deadline for this year’s SHS selection. The new date is Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The extension gives 2025 BECE candidates more time. This follows the addition of private Senior High Schools to the selection list.

GES says a supplementary register has been added. It contains the names of the new private senior high schools to guide students.

All Regional Directors have been directed to spread the message. They must inform Metro, Municipal, and District Directors. Heads of schools must also tell final-year students.

“This extension has become necessary due to the inclusion of private Senior High Schools in the selection process, allowing candidates additional time to make well-informed choices,” the GES statement said.

Candidates have been urged to seek advice. They should consult with teachers, parents, and guardians before making their choices.

Apart from the new schools, GES states that all other rules and processes remain unchanged.

He made the announcement on Friday, June 13, 2025, during a visit by the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari II, at the Jubilee House.

The President said the project is part of the Northern Savannah Economic Transformation Programme. It will focus on rice, maize, and soya bean production.

“This project will create employment for over 8,000 young farmers and help turn the northern region into a strong agro-industrial zone,” he stated.

He added that Yendi, Savelugu, and Karaga will serve as agribusiness processing centres. He also revealed plans to expand the shea and cashew sectors.

“These efforts will benefit thousands of rural women by offering them stable livelihoods based on traditional skills,” he added.

President Mahama also spoke about the National Apprenticeship Programme, which was launched in Tamale. It will offer training in carpentry, welding, tailoring, shea butter processing, and agribusiness.

He said the 2025 budget has already made room for the programme. It will be done in partnership with vocational schools and private companies.

“All of this fits into our larger 24-hour economy strategy, which will create more job opportunities and support growth in agro-processing logistics and community services,” the President concluded.

The Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, has commended President John Mahama for his appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Dr. Jacob Mahama delivered the message during a courtesy call on Friday, June 13. He said the stronger cedi would support household budgets and strengthen the national economy.

“The drastic drop in the dollar ratio from Gh₵17 to Gh₵11 in less than six months is a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about your administration’s commitment to prudent economic management,” the chief told the president.

“This significant reduction is not merely a numbered game; it reflects a deliberate effort to stabilise the economy, boost confidence in the cedi, and create a favourable environment for investment and growth,” he added.

Data from the market shows the cedi trading around GH₵10.25 to the US dollar on the interbank market. This is the strongest level in several years. The mid-market rate stands at about $0.0986 to GH₵1.

In late 2024, the cedi had fallen to nearly GH₵16 per dollar. The recent gains show renewed investor confidence.

Observers see this recovery as one of the key economic wins under Mahama’s leadership.

A stronger cedi is expected to reduce the cost of imports, ease inflation, and support long-term growth.
