Savanna News Flash card: Wa tricycle drivers allege daily extortion at police checkpoints

Commercial tricycle operators in Wa, popularly called Cambuu drivers, are accusing some police officers at checkpoints of collecting money from them every day, and want the authorities to step in.

The drivers told Info Radio that officers at designated barriers demand GH¢5 from each operator. One driver, Mr Hamza, said those who pass through several checkpoints can end up paying about GH¢50 a day. He described it as a serious financial burden at a time when business is already slow.

Another operator, Mr Hakim, speaking at the Wa Central Market, said drivers who refuse to pay are threatened with arrest and taken to the charge office. Operators say the payments, together with low sales, have already pushed some drivers out of work.

The drivers are calling on the Upper West Regional Police Command, the Upper West Regional Minister and the Wa Municipal Chief Executive to investigate and stop the collections.

The allegations have not been independently verified. When Info Radio published its report on 9 October 2026, the Upper West Regional Police Command had not responded. TheSavannaOnline will publish any response from the police.
