Kpukpalgu backs free fistula treatment drive as women urged to break the silence
The Kpukpalgu community has backed a free fistula treatment campaign, with health workers urging affected women to come forward for care.

The Kpukpalgu community in the Northern Region has thrown its support behind a free fistula treatment campaign, as health workers urged affected women to come forward for care.
A sensitisation event was held in the community on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. It was organised under Access Bank’s “Fight Against Fistula” campaign, which began in 2018. The bank renewed its partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) this year.
Health professionals, Access Bank officials and a representative of the Ministry of Health spoke at the event. The chief of Kpukpalgu endorsed the campaign.
Obstetric fistula is an injury from prolonged or obstructed childbirth that leaves women with constant leakage. It is treatable, but stigma keeps many women from seeking help.
Under the campaign, treatment is free, with all costs covered, including surgical repair. Women who complete treatment also receive financial support to start small businesses.
A survivor, Madam Mary, told the gathering she had lived with fistula and is now free of it.
Women with symptoms are advised to seek care early. Details on treatment centres and dates were not given at the event.
