Judges, guests and officials at the Justice Clubs inauguration in Tamale

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has inaugurated Justice Clubs in selected senior high schools in the Northern and North East Regions, as the Judicial Service extends its school mentoring programme to the North.

The ceremony took place in Tamale, according to a Ghana News Agency (GNA) report dated November 3. Beneficiary schools named by the GNA include Savelugu SHS, Presbyterian SHS in Tamale, St Charles Minor Seminary SHS, Tamale Girls SHS, Tamale SHS, Dagbon State Technical SHS and Orange Girls SHS in Walewale. Newly elected club executives were sworn in at the event.

Justice “is not only for judges”

Addressing the students, the Chief Justice said justice is not the work of judges and lawyers alone, and urged young people to practise fairness in their daily lives. He told the new executives to serve their peers rather than rule over them, cautioned students against spreading misinformation on social media, and urged them to reject bullying and discrimination. He also encouraged female students not to let gender stereotypes limit their ambitions.

The event was held under the theme “Cybersecurity and Emerging Trends: Empowering the Youth in Today’s Digital Era.”

About the programme

Court of Appeal Justice Prof. Olivia Anku-Tsede, who chairs the Chief Justice Mentoring Programme, said the initiative was started in 2008 by former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood to demystify the justice system for young people. It offers mentoring from judges, magistrates, state attorneys and private lawyers, as well as moot court experience.

She said 38 clubs had been set up in senior high schools in the Greater Accra, Western, Central, Eastern and Ashanti Regions since 2024, before this expansion to the North. She also warned students about cybercrime, online fraud, cyberbullying and identity theft.

The Chief of Lamanshegu, Naa Mohammed Iddrisu, commended the Judicial Service for the initiative, while the president of the Savelugu SHS Justice Club, Abass Osman, pledged the clubs’ commitment to justice and the rule of law on behalf of the executives.
