Sissala West completes three classroom blocks, receives first 1,000 desks for schools

Three communities in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region have new classroom blocks, and schools in the district have received the first 1,000 of an expected 3,000 desks, as the District Assembly moves to deal with abandoned school projects and furniture shortages.
According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), a three-unit classroom and kindergarten block at Sorbelle-Bullu, a suburb of Sorbelle, was started years ago by the Northern Development Authority but left unfinished. The Assembly completed it using the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), added the school to the School Feeding Programme and promised furniture.
A three-unit block at Nimoro was also funded through the DACF, while a GETFund-financed three-unit block at Duwie replaces classrooms that were in poor condition.
At Gwollu, the district capital, 1,000 mono-desks were handed to the Sissala West District Education Directorate. They are the first batch of 2,000 expected from GETFund, and the Assembly is also expecting 1,000 dual desks through the DACF. Together, the furniture is meant to seat about 4,000 pupils and students. Speakers at the handover urged the Ghana Education Service to share the desks fairly, including with Dr Hilla Limann Senior High School.
The District Chief Executive, Fuseini Abudu Gbene, said the projects followed concerns about abandoned school buildings raised by communities during the 2024 election campaign, and described them as part of commitments made by the governing National Democratic Congress. The Member of Parliament for Sissala West, Mohammed Adam Sukparu, joined the commissioning.
The Parent-Teacher Association chairperson at Sorbelle-Bullu, Fuseini Yaljia, thanked the government and Assembly, but the community also asked for a borehole at the school, saying pupils leave during lessons to drink water at home.
GNA did not give exact dates for the commissioning ceremonies.
