Nakpanduri asks for water system and school dining halls as SOCO team visits

Regent of Nakpanduri, Naba Fedrick Loaman Kansuk

The Regent of Nakpanduri in the North East Region, Naba Fedrick Loaman Kansuk, has appealed for a small-town water system, better school facilities and improved roads, telling visiting officials of a cross-border development project that the town’s needs have outgrown its boreholes.

According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Regent made the appeal when a delegation of the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project from Ghana and Togo called at the Nakpanduri Palace to review the project’s work in the community and exchange lessons between the two countries.

Naba Kansuk said boreholes drilled by residents have not kept pace with population growth. He asked for dining halls and boarding facilities for the town’s two senior high schools, where he said students currently eat under trees, and for repairs to inner roads to reduce accidents and ease movement.

He also requested the rehabilitation of the Nkrumah Guest House, which has stood in the town for more than five decades, and boreholes and irrigation along riverbanks so farmers can grow crops in the dry season and earn income all year. He credited SOCO with improving the local market and boosting trade.

The National SOCO Project Coordinator, Elizabeth Ohenewah Agyei, said the community’s priorities had already reached the project team informally and would now be formalised so residents could rank them. She said any work would follow the project’s processes. No budget or timeline was announced.

SOCO, supported by the World Bank, funds community-led projects in the northern border areas of Ghana, Togo, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire, with the aim of reducing the risk of conflict spreading from the Sahel. Nakpanduri, on the Gambaga escarpment, has been one of its implementation areas since the project began.
