Officials present support items to a beneficiary in Zabzugu

The Zabzugu District Assembly in the Northern Region has distributed items and cash worth GH¢311,435.65 to 148 persons with disabilities (PWDs) to help them start or grow small businesses and ease financial hardship.

According to Citi Newsroom, the support was paid for from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and forms part of government’s social protection effort for PWDs, particularly those working outside the formal sector and those who need help with medical or education costs.

Presenting the package at a ceremony in Zabzugu, the District Chief Executive, George Tanie, said the aim was to help beneficiaries build livelihoods that last. He reminded the gathering that disability “could be any of us” and urged recipients to invest what they received so they could provide for themselves in future.

The District Coordinating Director, Yussif Yakubu, said the district’s PWD Disbursement Committee would follow up with beneficiaries to make sure the items and money are used for the purposes intended.

Spread evenly, the package works out to an average of about GH¢2,100 per beneficiary, although the report did not give a breakdown of how much was paid in cash and how much in items, or list the items distributed.

A share of every assembly’s Common Fund allocation is set aside for persons with disabilities, with district committees deciding who benefits and monitoring how the support is used. Disability groups across the North have often called for the funds to be released on time and targeted at income-generating ventures rather than one-off handouts.

Zabzugu lies in the eastern corridor of the Northern Region, along Ghana’s border with Togo.
