The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has called on the government to urgently complete the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom road, accusing it of failing to keep promises made during President John Dramani Mahama’s August visit, according to Dreamz FM and GhanaWeb.

The party’s Regional Communications Director, Dr Samuel Akonga, made the call at a press conference held at the unfinished Kulaa Bridge at Yaragabisi in the Bolgatanga East Constituency on Tuesday, November 3.

Dr Akonga said the road is vital for traders, motorists and residents across the region, and that finishing it would ease transport difficulties and boost economic activity, Dreamz FM reported.

The NPP argues that the previous NDC administration awarded the contract in September 2016, shortly before that year’s election, without a dedicated funding source, and that work stood at 0% when the NPP took office. The party says its government later secured a €128 million loan to fund the project and pushed it close to completion. It says outstanding works include the Kulaa Bridge and bridges over the White Volta and Red Volta.

The party also alleged that the contractor moved heavy equipment to the site overnight during the President’s visit and left when he departed. It said Bolgatanga East MP Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine had been linked to assurances that funding was secured and work would resume. Neither the government nor the MP had responded publicly to the press conference at the time of writing.

During the President’s inspection tour in August, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza said the project was no longer loan-funded and had been placed on the national budget, the Ghana News Agency reported at the time. He said contractors had returned to site and that the road would be completed by the end of 2027. He also said the government was working to pay at least €8 million of a €28 million certificate owed to the contractors.

The 2016 award date, the funding history and the alleged overnight movement of equipment are the NPP’s claims and have not been independently verified by TheSavannaOnline.
