The Nandom Municipal Assembly in the Upper West Region has approved GH¢496,520 in cash and material support for 89 persons with disabilities under its October 2026 Disability Fund disbursement, Radio Tamale reports.

Most of the money, GH¢390,000, goes to 72 beneficiaries to start or expand income-generating activities. The rest covers medication, education, assistive devices, care support and organisational development.

How the money is shared

According to the report, five beneficiaries will receive GH¢16,600 for medication, and five others a total of GH¢22,600 for education. One person receives GH¢32,800 for an assistive device. Three beneficiaries share GH¢17,000 in care support, two receive GH¢13,520 for organisational development, and GH¢4,000 is earmarked for one beneficiary under an election category.

Speaking at the disbursement ceremony, Municipal Chief Executive Anthony Ziniel said the support was about creating opportunities, reducing hardship and promoting independence, not simply handing out money.

Assembly promises to monitor use of funds

Mr Ziniel urged those receiving business support to invest in their approved ventures and manage the funds responsibly. He said the Assembly, through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development and the Disability Fund Management Committee, would monitor how the support is used and assess its impact.

He also called on families, traditional authorities, religious leaders and schools to help end discrimination against persons with disabilities. “Disability should never be a reason for discrimination,” he said.

The Disability Fund is a share of the District Assemblies Common Fund that assemblies set aside for persons with disabilities in their areas.
