Forty-eight visually impaired women and their caregivers in Tamale have been trained to make and sell soap, in a programme meant to help them start small businesses and earn their own income, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports.

The three-day training was organised by the Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID), a non-governmental organisation, in partnership with the Ghana Blind Union (GBU).

Hands-on lessons in production and sales

According to GNA, participants worked through practical sessions on making different kinds of soap, with a focus on liquid soap, and on how to market their products and run a small business.

CALID Executive Director Mohammed Awal Sumani Bapio said the aim was to help the women become self-reliant, and urged them to put the skills into practice by going into self-employment.

Call for more support

GBU President Imoro Mohammed thanked CALID and appealed to other NGOs to offer similar programmes to persons with disabilities to improve their economic and social wellbeing.

Speaking for the beneficiaries, Aisha Abukari said the training had given them practical skills to improve their livelihoods, and asked the public to buy their products.

The Ghana Blind Union is the national association of blind and partially sighted people in Ghana and advocates for their rights and inclusion.

Support for livelihoods of persons with disabilities is also coming through district assemblies. Separately, the Nandom Municipal Assembly in the Upper West Region has approved GH¢496,520 from its Disability Fund for 89 persons with disabilities, most of it for small businesses.
